Thorne Build and Design

Welcome

A web site is like a new home: plans are drawn, a foundation is laid, a frame is raised and, over time, a structure emerges that is hopefully welcoming and warm; a place to visit again and again.

This site focuses on my work and my dream projects, always guided by my philosophy of building responsibly. Through words and pictures (lots of pictures!) I hope to share with you my passion for building in such a way that structure and environment enhance - and never detract from - each other's natural beauty.

This site - like my current projects - is a work in progress. I'm as anxious as you are to see what emerges.

Straw Bale House

A house made of straw?

"Walking in a straw bale house can feel almost like entering a religious sanctum."

Just what is a straw bale house?

A Word about the Environment and Energy

As a design and builder, I committed to building in a way that has the least impact on the environment. I site homes to take full advantage of solar radiation. I build large eaves that shade homes from hot summer sun but allow the low winter sun to warm interiors. I build with eco- friendly renewable, recyclable, and long lasting materials. I super insulate the houses I build. All wood waste produced on my job sites are collected and recycled.

The one thing as a builder I can't do is force homeowners' to take the personal responsibility to buy super efficient appliances, and invest in alternative fuel and electricity sources. The government offers tax breaks and rebates to homeowners', but not to house builders. It is my intention for all the houses I build to have alternative fuel sources. I have provided the infrastructure. The future occupant needs to join with me, to make this a reality.

As Americans, we produce 25% of the worlds' greenhouse gases and pollution, yet we constitute only 5% of the world population. Europeans and Japanese, who have the same standard of living as the United States, use only 50% of the energy that we Americans' consume. Our scientist our telling us that we are on a course for disastrous climate changes if we don't make significant changes immediately. They point to global warming as the root cause for the increasingly severe hurricanes that have been occurring.

Let us join together and work for a better future. Take the personal responsibility for not getting our power from coal burning power plants in New England. Support industries that can make a difference. Please pay the cost of installing solar power and other alternative electricity and heating sources and feel good about doing your part to protect the environment for our children.
